| World ID and Proof of Personhood One way to think about World ID is as a global digital passport that lives locally on its holder’s phone. World ID’s most important property is that the holder can use it to prove that they are a real and unique person without sharing personal data using zero-knowledge proofs. World ID supports multiple types of verifications that accomplish this with varying degrees of accuracy. At launch, this includes phone number verification and privacy-preserving iris verifications as the flagship credential given its inclusivity, scalability and robustness. The first hardware device to support this standard is the Orb, an open iris imaging device developed by TFH. | Using World ID Getting your World ID It’s as simple as downloading a compatible wallet, starting with World App. More will be coming soon. Phone verification is available in most countries for users and developers starting today. Given Worldcoin is still in Beta, Orb availability is mostly limited to Argentina, Chile, India, Kenya, Portugal and Spain, as well as demos at blockchain and identity conferences. A broader rollout is expected later this year, and nearby devices can be found using the World App. Sign in with World ID The simplest way to use World ID is as a sign in method. Upon selecting Sign in with Worldcoin on a website, mobile app or crypto dapp, you approve or reject the request from your self-custodial wallet to authenticate and prove you’re a real and unique person. One person does not always equal one account, so the system also supports pseudonyms. Apps can allow their users to set up multiple accounts with one World ID in such a way that only the user knows they all belong to their World ID. This is useful if, for example, a social media app wants to limit people to five verified profiles to prevent bots while maintaining privacy. | Sign In with Worldcoin Sign In with Worldcoin is built to bring the privacy benefits of World ID to a broad range of apps as easily as possible. It is a simple, drop-in authentication mechanism that works with any OIDC-compatible authentication engine. ✅ When to use Sign In with Worldcoin: You want to know that an account belongs to a real person, and each real person only has one account. You already use Auth0, NextAuth, or a similar authentication engine in your app. You want to allow users to preserve their privacy, or even stay completely anonymous. 🚫 When not to use Sign In with Worldcoin: Your app has an on-chain component (e.g. a smart contract). | Built for all, without compromises World App does not require any personal information, and any data you choose to share in the app can be deleted with the tap of a button. As a client for World ID, World App also runs all the required cryptography locally to fulfill the privacy commitments of the protocol. Importantly, World ID and wallet keys are self-custodial, and users can choose to back up their keys (encrypted) to Google Drive or iCloud for syncing and recovery. The native iOS and Android apps are also engineered to maximize inclusivity. At around 18MB, they’re 5x smaller than the industry average. They are localized to multiple languages and support most active smartphones in the world (98.2% of Androids and 94.5% of iPhones to be precise), including some more than 10 years old. Multiple components are already open source, and more will be in the months ahead. Looking ahead Since its initial debut, 1.5 million people have joined the World App pre-release, more than 500,000 of which use it every month.
